Ethiopia, monastery
near Adigrad, 2007
There are several active monasteries in the north of Ethiopia. They
are all located remotely, and some of them very difficult to reach,
because the monks were hiding there about 500 years ago, when the
king, who created the Ethiopian church culture, killed all monks
who did not want to believe in him in the same way as they believed
in God. Every monastery has a library with very old handwritten books,
that exists only once. The students are children, given to the monastery
by their parents, they study by reading loud each one another book,
while an older monk listens to all of them and corrects them. The
monks have their separate home, but come together for eating and
drinking beer.
